ATHENA AND THE ROLE OF EDUCATION ANIMALS
Athena, our only Barn Owl and one of our permanent residents, offers a rare opportunity to experience a species that is typically seen only in passing, if at all. As a nocturnal hunter, Barn Owls play an important role in our ecosystem, yet their quiet nature means many people never truly get the chance to observe them up close.
Through Athena, we’re able to give people a closer look at how these birds live and the role they play in the wild. She helps build understanding of a species most people rarely encounter, and that understanding is just as important as the care we provide. This time of year brings new life and new challenges, and with it, the opportunity to learn how to recognize when intervention is needed, and when it’s best to allow nature to take its course.

PREVENTION: THE BEST BABY BIRD REHABILITATION
Each spring, well-meaning people bring in young birds that never needed help. Many of these birds are in a normal stage of development, still being cared for by their parents even if they appear alone. Understanding how birds grow, and knowing when to step in or step back, is one of the most important ways we can give them the best chance at survival.
Thank you to everyone who supported our Virtual Baby Shower. Your generosity helps provide the specialized care, nutrition, and supplies needed for the youngest patients that come through our doors.
