THE FIRST COMBAT-DEPLOYED SUBMARINE VESSEL
DEBUTED DURING THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION.
The submersible, known as the Turtle, had only enough air to be submerged for 30 minutes.
Its first mission, planting a bomb underneath a British warship, failed, and it was only used two other times before an American ship transporting it was sunk by British forces.
The US Navy eventually honored its inventor, David Bushnell, by naming multiple submarines after him.
