Sitting on my lanai currently and feeling the mist of the never-ending summer rain. By the time this is published, I would hope the word drought is left out of our vocabulary. It’s certainly been a hot and wet summer here in Burnt Store Lakes.
As this will be read in November, I have a question I’ve been meaning to ask. Where are the “trick or treaters?” I mean, I always enjoyed the kiddos in clown costumes, ninjas, superheroes, princesses, and one time a walking shark. But since our move to the Lakes, now six years ago, there have been no children at the door. I buy a bag of candy each year, hoping this year might be different. But by darkness, I am disappointed and vibrating from a sugar high. (Yes, I know better.)
In the first few years, we even put the dogs in costumes and had a doggie gate at the door so that the dogs could experience the fun of little ones visiting our home. But no children came. We turned off the light. We took down the doggie gate, and the dogs looked at us, confused and disappointed, in the failed evening. We closed our door and realized we had just experienced “elderly.”
The Bible says, “suffer not the little children to come to me.” There is so much wisdom and so much joy in that command. But if I could choose, I would plan a trick or treat event that would attract the kids to Burnt Store Lakes. I would have only the best candy, and my dog would be in the cutest of costumes. But I’m not certain where to begin to make that happen.
So, I guess I will simply sit (not in costume) here on my lanai.
