I’ve flown through a lot of airports in my time. I used to travel nearly five days a month when I was a working person.

But flying out of Punta Gorda I always experience three phenomena. The first is how much stuff travelers try to stuff into their one-allowed carry-on. The rule should be if you can’t lift it – you can’t have it. I refuse to sit on the aisle because I could end up with a concussion due to someone’s too heavy bag getting away from them.

The second phenom is surely a type of undiagnosed medical concern or ongoing deterioration. I’ve identified two prevailing conditions: “Tech Neck” and “Phone Face.” The people bury themselves in their devices and permanently alter their appearance and posture.

Lastly, apparently none of their phones can be silenced. But I do feel included in their personal calls as they use the “speaker phone” option, and I get the updates on their family, their medical, pending divorces, and the other better left as personal conversations. Sometimes they play video games with the irritating noises while they sit and practice “Phone Face.”

I think I may offer a TED Talk on the virtues of phone etiquette. Likely no one will attend unless I offer it by phone.

So, I will just sit and talk to my friends and family and ask, “can you hear me now?” here on my lanai.
