REPRINT OF DR. MELISSA REICHERT’S WEEKLY MESSAGE FOR THE CITY OF PUNTA GORDA (AMENDED)
As June begins, so does the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season. While forecasters are predicting a less active season than recent years, history has taught us that it only takes one storm to significantly impact our community. That is why now is the time to prepare, not when a storm is approaching. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, and every resident, business owner, and visitor should take steps today to ensure they are ready. NOAA is forecasting a below-normal season, but officials continue to stress that even a single hurricane can cause devastating impacts through wind, storm surge, flooding, and tornadoes. Our residents know firsthand the importance of hurricane preparedness. Over the past several years, our community has experienced the effects of Hurricanes Irma, Ian, Helene, and Milton.
These storms remind us that preparation makes a tremendous difference in protecting lives, property, and our ability to recover quickly. One of the most important steps residents can take is to review their emergency plans. Know whether you live in an evacuation zone and understand where you would go if an evacuation order is issued. Make arrangements now for pets, family members with special medical needs, and any transportation challenges that could arise during an emergency. Waiting until a storm is approaching often leaves little time to make important decisions.
Residents should assemble or refresh their hurricane supply kits. Emergency management officials recommend having enough supplies to be self-sufficient for at least seven days. This includes drinking water, nonperishable food, prescription medications, flashlights, batteries, first aid supplies, important documents, and cash. Consider adding phone charging devices, sanitation supplies, and any specialty items needed for children, seniors, or pets. Now is also a good time to inspect your property. Trim trees and shrubs, secure loose outdoor furniture, clean gutters and drainage areas, and verify that shutters or other window protection systems are in good condition. If you have a generator, test it before hurricane season and ensure you understand safe operating procedures.
Reviewing your insurance coverage is another important step that should not wait until a storm is on the horizon. One of the easiest and most effective ways to stay informed during hurricane season is to sign up for Alert Charlotte. This free emergency notification system allows the County to send important information directly to residents by phone, text message, and/or email. During emergencies, Alert Charlotte provides timely updates regarding evacuation orders, road closures, utility service interruptions, shelter information, boil water notices, and other critical public safety information. Residents can register by visiting the city’s website at
