FEATURED RESIDENTS, Laughing Gulls
LAUGHTER ALONG THE COAST
Laughing Gulls are a familiar sight along Florida’s coastlines, known for their sharp calls that sound remarkably like laughter. These social seabirds play an important role in coastal ecosystems and are often seen soaring above beaches, marinas, and waterways throughout the summer months.
Skyra arrived at Peace River Wildlife Center in 2008 after suffering an injury that prevented a return to the wild. More than a decade later, this species continues to help guests connect with wildlife many people see every day, but rarely stop to truly observe and understand.
Happy Feet joined PRWC in 2019 and, while no longer with us, was also part of helping visitors learn more about these remarkable coastal birds. In the wild, Laughing Gulls typically live between 15 and 22 years, though some individuals have been known to live much longer.
