Notice Regarding Moto Bikes And Electric Dirt Bikes

  • July 2026
  • Burnt Store Lakes

Under Florida law, high-powered electric dirt bikes and moto bikes, including vehicles such as Surrons, are often not considered legal e-bikes. Many of these vehicles exceed Florida e-bike speed and power limits, operate mainly by throttle, and may not have fully functional pedals. Because of this, law enforcement may classify them as motorcycles, off-highway vehicles, or motor-driven cycles instead of bicycles.

If classified as a motorcycle, these vehicles may require registration, a license plate, insurance, DOT-approved equipment, and a motorcycle endorsement to operate legally.

In simple terms, low-speed pedal-assisted bicycles are generally considered legal e-bikes under Florida law, whereas high-speed dirt-bike-style electric vehicles are not.

Please be advised that moto bikes and electric dirt bikes are not permitted on community streets, sidewalks, pathways, or common areas. Operating these vehicles in the community may constitute trespassing and will be addressed accordingly.

For everyone’s safety, if you observe these vehicles being operated in the community, please do not approach or engage with the rider. Instead, report the activity to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office Non-Emergency Line (941) 639-2101.

Thank you for helping keep our BSL community safe.
